Smoke Detector Safety

Installation & Placement

Coverage

Place alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, and inside and outside each separate sleeping area.

Location

Mount on the ceiling or high on a wall (within 12 inches of the ceiling).

What to Avoid

Keep them at least 10 feet from cooking appliances, away from windows, doors, air vents, and steamy bathrooms to prevent false alarms.

Interconnected Alarms

For best results, use interconnected alarms so when one sounds, they all sound.

Maintenance & Testing

Test Monthly

Press the test button on each alarm once a month.

Replace Batteries

Change batteries at least once a year, or immediately when you hear the low-battery chirp (often when daylight saving time starts/ends).

Clean Regularly

Vacuum the vents and surfaces gently to remove dust and cobwebs.

Replace Units

Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 10 years.

Additional Tips

Do Not Paint

Never paint or decorate smoke alarms as it blocks their sensors.

Know Your Alarms

Consider dual-sensor (ionization/photoelectric) or combination smoke/CO alarms for comprehensive protection.

Have A Plan

Practice your home fire escape plan with your family.
