DIAL 9-1-1 FOR EMERGENCIES

Home Evacuation Safety

Before a Fire (Preparation)

Create a Plan

Develop a family escape plan with two ways out of every room, as well as an outdoor meeting spot.

Practice

Conduct a fire frill at least twice a year. EDITH: Exit Drills In The Home

Emergency Kit

Prepare an accessible emergency kit with essential supplies and medications.

Pets

Plan for pets (crates, pet-friendly lodging) as they aren’t allowed in most shelters.

During an Evacuation

Alert and Get Out

Alert your family and get everyone out immediately. Keep doors closed behind you to slow the spread of fire. If you live in an apartment complex pull the fire alarm.

Check Doors

Always check doors with the back of your hand for heat. If the door is warm find an alternative route to safety.

Stay Low

If you see smoke, crawl lo to the floor to avoid inhaling it.

Utilize Stairs

If you live in and/or are staying in a building with an elevator, do not use it in the event of a fire; always utilize the stairs.

Stay Out

Once you have safely evacuated and arrive at your meeting spot call 911. Do not under any circumstances go back inside, including pets or valuables.

Trapped

If you are trapped in a room and unable to evacuate, seal cracks in doors with cloths, make noise to get responders’ attention. If you’re able, go to a window and signal for help.

Wildfires

If ordered to evacuate for wildfires, leave immediately, secure all windows and doors, turn off your HVAC system, and move flammable materials away from the windows.
