DIAL 9-1-1 FOR EMERGENCIES

Carbon Monoxide Detector Safety

Installation & Placement

Location

Place on every level of your home, including the basement, and outside each sleeping area (within 10 feet of bedrooms).

Height

About 5 feet from the floor on a wall, or on the ceiling, as CO mixes with warm air.

What to Avoid

Don't place near flames, in very humid bathrooms, or right next to fuel -burning appliances (keep at least 15 feet away).

Interconnected Alarms

For best results, use interconnected alarms so when one sounds, they all sound.

Maintenance & Testing

Test Monthly

Press the test button on each alarm once a month.

Replace Batteries

Change batteries at least once a year, or immediately when you hear the low -battery chirp (often when daylight saving time starts/ends).

Clean Regularly

Vacuum the vents and surfaces gently to remove dust and cobwebs.

Replace Units

Replace the entire unit every 5 -7 years, checking manufacturer's instructions .

Prevention & Awareness

Appliance Checks

Have furnaces, water heaters, and chimneys professionally inspected yearly. Check that the gas appliance pilot lights are blue; a yellow flame indicates CO production.

Clear Vents

Keep dryer, furnace, and stove vents clear of snow, debris, and lint.

Usage of Outdoor Appliances Indoors

Never run generators, cars, or grills in garages, even with the door open, or indoors.

What to do if a CO alarm sounds

Evacuate Immediately

Don't wait; leave the house for fresh air.

Call 911

Call for help from outside or a safe location.

Seek Fresh Air
